National Organization For Marriage president Brian Brown is just not good at covering his tracks.
In July 2011 — almost two years ago to the day — lamenting New
York’s recently passed law supporting same-sex marriage, Brown called
town clerks who refused to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples —
in violation of the new law — “the first victims” on “the front-lines
of the marriage debate.”
“They invested years in jobs where they never expected to have to
help solemnize gay unions,” Brown conveniently cried in their defense,
via a fundraising email. ”Welcome to the world gay-marriage advocates
are trying to create,” he continued.
NOM actually ran three stories on their blog, holding up as a hero, a “victim,” and a “casualty” one New York town clerk who ultimately ended up resigning.
Today, however, Brian Brown sang a different tune. He went ballistic over the clerks in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, who issued marriage licenses to same-sex couples this morning.
“These county officials are brazenly flaunting the law,” Brown said in a statement,
adding they are “substituting their personal views for those of the
people as expressed through their elected representatives in state
government.”
Curiously, that New York town clerk who refused in 2011 to follow the
law was a hero and a “victim,” despite the fact that by refusing to
issue marriage licenses she would have been “brazenly flaunting the law”
and “substituting [her] personal views for those of the people as
expressed through their elected representatives in state government.”
Brown today added of those Montgomery County, PA clerks:
Their actions go beyond marriage and implicates [sic] the integrity of the rule of law. This cannot be allowed to stand. We will explore every opportunity to hold these officials responsible for intentionally violating the law, including paths leading to their removal from office.”
So, it’s really not “the law” that Brian Brown has an issue with,
it’s the law he likes — or doesn’t. That’s not following the rule of
law, that’s hypocrisy, Brian Brown style.
