Many agree that Rubio’s name on the bill will
garner enormous media attention, thus giving more national visibility to
the abortion fight currently being waged by the GOP’s social
conservatives. Pro-life groups have urged Rubio to be the public face of
the issue, believing he’d be the strongest asset for the bill in the
Senate.
Several sources have confirmed that he’s agreed.
If true, Rubio’s agreement to play a major role in
the abortion fight is bound to spark speculation in regards to his plans
for 2016. However, Rubio has been the subject of criticism from many in
the GOP for his support of the immigration reform bill that recently
passed in the Senate. If anything, his presence with the abortion bill
could provide a helpful strategical dynamic to ease concerns about him
from GOP voters.
The abortion issue has seemed to provide a boost
for far-right GOP politicians, with one beneficiary of that boost being
Governor Rick Perry of Texas, who is considering another term as
governor or possibly a run for president in 2016.
Perry has come under fire his comments directed at
Texas state Senator Wendy Davis in the wake of her famous filibuster of
the Texas abortion bill, where he seemingly used her past as a single
teenage mother to criticize her pro-choice ideology.
Perry’s poorly-timed comments came on the heels of a
resurgence of GOP-ers delving back into their bizarre and ill-informed
comments on rape and abortion. At the very least, Rubio’s backing of the
bill will take some of the attention away from the fringe element of
the GOP that has lost the party too many elections.
