Illinois’ ban on same sex marriage is facing a court challenge this morning. Cook County Circuit Court Judge Sophia Hall will hear arguments on
whether to dismiss a case that challenges the state’s ban on same-sex
marriage. The lawsuit involves 25 couples who were denied marriage licenses in Cook County. They want the judge to effectively legalize gay marriage in Illinois.
In a motion filed last month, the ACLU and a gay-rights group cited a
Supreme Court ruling that extended benefits to same-sex couples in
states that already allow gay marriage. Efforts to make gay marriage illegal in Illinois have stalled. Civil Unions were approved in Illinois in 2011.
