On Janet Mefferd's radio show, New Mexico state senator Bill Sharer
(R-Farmington) said this about his colleagues who have introduced bills
seeking to grant civil marriage equality to same-sex couples:
"Any two things that want to get married," you guess?! Wow.
"Any two things that want to get married," you guess?! Wow.
First off, senator—I'm not a "thing." I'm a human. And taxpayer.
Second, has anyone introduced any kind of bill that seeks marriage
for any two "things" other human beings? No! The only bills that have
been introduced into the state legislature involve removing the
unwarranted sender requirement for marriage. So while I know it's
totally acceptable in far-right, anti-circles to just say whatever the
hell you want in order to scare your constituents so that they'll buy
into the fearful "slippery slope" argument, there are these pesky little
things called facts. An in fact, no state senator has pushed for
marriage between a man and his toaster!
And finally—how dare you show such callous disregard for your good
and decent constituents who just so happen to be attracted to someone of
the same gender?! I know it's all a joke to you and to Janet (her
laughter really sealed the deal), but this is not a joke to us. This is
life, one that your push for civil inequality is unnecessarily
encumbering. If you insist on defining your legislative career with
this unreasonable bias against certain kinds of human beings who reside
in your state, then so be it. But sir, I can assure you that we are
going to have the last laugh. So that being the case, how's about you
stop crudely mocking us here in the present?
