How do you become one of the most hated businesses in America?
Commit civil rights violations! That's what the owners of Sweet Cakes by
Melissa did several months ago, and it's been quite a battle against
the cocky bakers who believed they could get away with disparaging
entire groups of people. This update in the bigoted baker saga comes
with wonderful news: 'Sweet Cakes' is closing.
Yes, you read
that right. The bakery owned by Aaron Klein and his wife Melissa will be
closing down amid the scandal surrounding their refusal to serve same
sex couples. This is the post they left on the official 'Sweet Cakes' Facebook page: (cleaned up for poor grammar)
"This
will be our last weekend at the shop[.] We are moving our business to
an in home bakery. I will post our new number soon. Email will stay the
same."
This is certainly a win for the LGBTQ community in
Gresham, Ore., and it certainly creates further precedent for cases
involving same sex discrimination. These bigoted business owners have
violated their state's consumer protection law that prohibits them from
refusing service based on sexual orientation. Aaron and Melissa Klein
thought they could get away with it, and for a moment their business
supposedly thrived, but that short spike in business collapsed as it was
revealed that cars stopped being spotted in front of their shop
altogether. The intense, and deserved, public scrutiny they were under
(along with the pending lawsuit against them), has evidently forced them
to move "underground" so-to-speak.
Since they are downsizing to
running their cake shop "in their home," one could imagine that the
sanitary conditions are going to be quite different from before. This is
definitely not a move up in the right direction, but a sign of the
inevitable death rattle to come. I for one would not be interested in
purchasing a wedding cake made in the very same kitchen and in the same
oven used to prepare their Frito pies or whatever it is they eat
throughout each day.
I wish Aaron and Melissa Klein the best in
their future endeavors, but truly elated that they are closing down
their bakery. There was no reason for Aaron to reduce a lesbian couple
to tears while refusing to provide a cake for their wedding (he referred
to them as abominations). And there was no reason for Aaron Klein to
take to the internet to make racist remarks and personal attacks against
me as well as "liberals" and President Obama. It was Aaron Klein and he
alone who ruined Sweet Cakes by Melissa -- which is a shame, because he
permanently sullied his wife's name.
Hopefully in the future
these two can operate a busines in the state of Oregon that doesn't
discriminate against the public and doesn't violate the law. In the
meantime, they should stick to baking cupcakes for their church and for
family picnics where their brand of bigotry is better "swallowed."
