From the ‘Pay It Forward’ files, comes a story out of Boston
guaranteed to grow hearts everywhere to post-conversion Grinch sizes.
This random drive-by act of kindness took place this past Tuesday
night. A couple presumed to be mother and daughter were dining
together, when a phone call to the younger woman interrupted the meal.
Tears flowed at their table in the aftermath of the call. As the
waiter reported later on Reddit:
“I had no idea what happened until a single guy at the table next to them handed me this note with his bill. Faith in humanity, restored.”
The note implies that the diners’ emotional reaction to the call was
due to receiving news of a serious medical diagnosis. The friendly
stranger took matters into his own wallet and paid the couple’s tab
anonymously, as all truly charitable deeds should be.
Beloved childhood icon Willy Wonka said, long before he became a snarky internet meme,
“So shines a good deed in a weary world.”
Our world overflows with weariness and trouble, and no doubt, our
faith in humanity often takes the punishment it deserves. That is why
we love these kinds of stories. These deeds are simple, quiet acts of
compassion that honor human dignity and worth. Let their simple virtue
and ease of execution be an example to us. If you choose to forward
this story, make a promise to yourself to emulate it in some way as soon
as a situation permits.
Be your own restorer of faith in ourselves.
