In an interview with conservative radio host, Hugh Hewitt Senator
Mike Lee (R-UT) said that he and his cohort, Tail Gunner Ted Cruz had
been unfairly attacked by fellow Republicans in a recent closed-door
meeting over their campaign to use a government shutdown to stop
“Obamacare” from going into effect.
He said that they normally have a very strict rule about not talking
about what goes on in such meetings but that since some other Senators
had “leaked” to the press reports that he and Cruz had been castigated
for what the more moderate elements of the party see as the damaging
push to shut the government down, he felt that he could speak of it this
time.
He said, “It was an all-out attack against Ted Cruz and me. It was
unflattering. It was unfair. It was demeaning.” Going on he added, “It
was demeaning to Senator Cruz and to me, but more than anything it was
demeaning to those who engaged in the attacks.”
Claiming that he and Cruz have the full support of the base, he said
that they Senators who had attacked them were afraid to come forward and
admit to having taken part, because they know that the people will turn
on them and vote them out of office the next time around.
According to Lee this tactic is going to succeed, he says that it is
now obvious that it is an “unstoppable” movement, backed by the American
people, even though all of the polls show that the people as a whole
did not and do not support shutting down the government or defunding
Obamacare. There are still many who are apprehensive about the law and
it’s implications however even so they do not think that the way to
oppose it is to bring the government to a complete standstill just to
stop something that is actually unstoppable.
While he speaks of the attacks as personal attacks he offers no
examples of the personal nature of anything that was said merely
insisting that he and Tail Gunner are being unfairly maligned and
refusing to name names of those who supposedly attacked him so unfairly.
He finished up the interview by saying that there is little chance
that the House will pass a clean CR and vowing that if they do he will
never vote for it when it comes to the Senate.
I believe the Tea Party is in its death throes.
