A lesbian snowboarder from the Netherlands became the first Olympic
athlete to protest at the Games in Sochi. Yesterday, after a failed
attempt to qualify for the slope style event, Dutch snowboarder Cheryl
Maas looked into the camera then held her glove up to the camera’s lens.
The glove was covered with a rainbow and unicorn, two distinct icons associated with the LGBT community.
Maas, who is 29, is married to Norwegian former snowboarder Stine
Brun Kjeldaas.
As Towleroad notes, she is also one of just six openly-gay athletes in the Sochi Olympics.
