Top Republican activist Phyllis Schlafly, who has been at the forefront of GOP “women’s issues” for decades, writes today in the Christian Post that women need to make lower salaries than men, lest they not find husbands.
Schlafly, you might recall, had a large hand in defeating the Equal Rights Amendment in the 1970s.
Schlafly’s comments come in response to President Obama’s, and Democrats’, push for the passage of “equal pay” laws to address earning-inequality between men and women working similar jobs in the same professions.
Schlafly starts by claiming that women typically like to settle down with a man who earns more than them. ”Another fact is the influence of hypergamy, which means that women typically choose a mate (husband or boyfriend) who earns more than she does,” Schlafly writes. “Men don’t have the same preference for a higher-earning mate.”

Yeah, I’m sure some men don’t have the same preference. In fact, some men prefer their women to be barefoot and pregnant, and that’s a large part of the problem.
Schlafly continues: “While women prefer to HAVE a higher-earning partner, men generally prefer to BE the higher-earning partner in a relationship. This simple but profound difference between the sexes has powerful consequences for the so-called pay gap.”
Schlafly worries that if we started paying women the same money for the same job that men do, women would suddenly be “unable to find a suitable mate.”
Schlafly concludes with the incredible claim that if women can’t find men who are paid more than them, women may just stop marrying altogether.“Suppose the pay gap between men and women were magically eliminated. If that happened, simple arithmetic suggests that half of women would be unable to find what they regard as a suitable mate.”
“Obviously, I’m not saying women won’t date or marry a lower-earning men, only that they probably prefer not to. If a higher-earning man is not available, many women are more likely not to marry at all.”
Schlafly, of course, is more than just an expert on finding a man. She’s also a Latino expert. Here’s Schlafly explaining how Latinos simply couldn’t understand the concept of the Bill of Rights:
RADIO HOST: There’s a lot of Hispanics here in Kern County, and in California. You know, socially they should be Republicans because they have the same family value ethic we do. They feel the same way about the abortion issue. Yet the minority community is Democrat (sic). Have we dropped the ball as Republicans with the minority community?
PHYLLIS SCHLAFLY: No. I think the Republicans have misread them all. I don’t think they have Republican inclinations at all. They’re running an illegitimacy rate that’s just about the same as the blacks are. And the point fact is they come from a country where they have no experience with limited government, and the types of rights we have in the Bill of Rights. They don’t understand that at all. You can’t even talk to them about what the Republican principle is.
