Pittsburgh band Comfort Tech got to meet the Secret Service…AND the President during a recent visit Barack Obama and Joe Biden made to Community College of Allegheny County’s West Hills Center. Upon hearing that the President would be visiting, the band decided to do something special to greet the President: They hung a banner above the garage that read “Welcome, Mr. President!” and proceeded to rock out for the President’s motorcade in the driveway-turned-”stage”.
“I definitely hit wrong notes because I was looking out in awe,” said bass player and singer Brett White. “It was surreal. It’s not every day you get to play your music as the president drives by your house.”
“I think it was a unique visual for them. When they come to an event like this, they know what to expect. Everything has been planned out to the minute,” guitarist and singer Sean Conner said.
While the Secret Service would not allow President Obama to stop and hear the band, the Secret Service did show up soon after. “We thought for sure we were going to get shut down,” said Conner, but they just wanted to compliment the band’s music.
Then, the four bandmembers received a shock: the President wanted to meet them. As they arrived, they heard the President asking, “Where’s Comfort Tech? Where’s the band?”
“He said he wanted to come over and hear us play but the Secret Service wouldn’t let him,” White said.
They were invited to stay for the President’s speech. At the end, the President pointed at them and said, “All right, Comfort Tech,”as he flashed his trademark smile and a thumbs-up.
Then, Connor explained, “we had to walk home and convince people that it actually happened.”
