Allen West, one term congressman and Fox News commentator, attacked Representative Tammy Duckworth (D-IL), questioning her loyalty and her fitness to serve on the House Select Committee looking into the Benghazi attack for the eighth time on Wednesday.
Duckworth is an Iraq war veteran who lost both legs and much of the use of her right arm in combat when the helicopter she was piloting was struck by a rocket propelled grenade. She is a recipient of the Purple Heart, Air Medal and an Army Commendation Medal and was able to obtain a medical waiver allowing her continued service as a Lt. Colonel in the Illinois National Guard.
West, who was forced to retire from the Army in disgrace or face a court martial for assault, was speaking to Janet Mefferd on Fox Radio when he made his disparaging comments about Duckworth.
To be fair, he criticized every Democrat chosen for the committee, however his comments about Duckworth went way too far:
“Tammy Duckworth, you know I just don’t know where her loyalties lie, for her to have been a veteran and a wounded warrior for the United States Army, she should know that this is not the right thing and hopefully she will remember the oath of office that she took as an Army officer and not the allegiance I guess she believes she has to the liberal progressives of the Democrat party,” he told Mefferd.
Representative Elijah Cummings was asked what he thought about West’s remarks during an interview with Andrea Mitchell on MSNBC.
“You know, it doesn’t even deserve a response,” said an obviously irate Cummings. “He should be ashamed of himself and I’ll make that very clear and if I see him I’ll tell him that….And sometimes Andrea, she comes in the hearing room in a wheel chair and struggling, struggling just to get to her seat and somebody to have the audacity to say something like that upsets me to the nth degree.”
Of course, it is really no surprise that West would say something like this. The GOP has never been secretive about the fact that only those who vote Republican are “true” patriots in their estimation.
