While This Megachurch Charlatan Said She Prays for Good Parking Spots, 14 Children Died in Poverty

“Praying just opens the dialogue between you and God,” Victoria Osteen explains to The Huffington Post‘s Mark Lamont Hill when he asks her about prayer. She and her televangelist husband, Joel Osteen, appeared on Hill’s show to promote their 11-city “Night of Hope” tour.

Osteen then goes on to explain we should also pray because God — who’s supposed to be this ancient, omnipotent Being – needs our attention.
“Well, sometimes people say, well you know, I have to get on my knees, I have to do it a certain way, but really, what God wants you to do is just give him your attention.”
The Osteens co-pastor the largest protestant megachurch in the U.S., the Lakewood Church in Houston, TX. According to Wikipedia, over seven million people from around the world watch their weekly services on television. Between their mega church and their media empire, the Osteens have a net worth of $40 million. You’d think that – with all this material wealth, plus that special relationship with God – you’d never need to worry about anything again.

Yet, Victoria Osteen still sweats the small stuff. She even prays to God for a good parking spot when she drops off her kids, and takes care to explain why this isn’t totally dumb.
“Even if I’m going to drop my kids off, or I need to park somewhere, I’m like, ‘OK God, you know I’m in this parking lot, you know any place you can open up for me would be great!’” she said. “I just have this relationship- I’m not dumbing down prayer. What I’m doing- it’s just part of my life.”

Jeez, what if everyone in the world kept pestering God about petty crap — like finding a parking spot — all the livelong day and night? When would He ever find time to smite down all those abortionists and gay fornicators?

As a sad, but very relevant side note, during the minute-or Osteen took to explain her unique parking strategy, 14 children died in poverty all over the world. Maybe God was too busy looking for Mrs. Osteen’s parking space to help them out.

Global Issues reports that these children die needlessly from causes related to poverty.
“The silent killers are poverty, hunger, easily preventable diseases and illnesses, and other related causes. Despite the scale of this daily/ongoing catastrophe, it rarely manages to achieve, much less sustain, prime-time, headline coverage.”
Watch Victoria Osteen explain how she prays at about 50 seconds into the video.
