Seriously? What Marriage Equality Opponents Are Saying

Here’s the the latest in our ongoing series of some of the crazy things the anti-gay marriage equality opponents are saying and doing around the world.

Gay Parents Are Bad

Robert Oscar Lopez, a bisexual man with a lesbian mother who constantly attacks LGBT rights, wrote a letter to California Governor Jerry Brown urging him to veto a bill that would allow gay couples to put both parents’ names on their child’s borth certificate:
I know that a bill, AB 1951, sponsored by Jimmy Gomez of Los Angeles, may reach your desk for signature soon. It will allow for birth certificates to be issued, which indicate gay men as ‘mother’ and lesbians as ‘father.’ I would like you to veto it and please begin the process of reversing California’s destructive trend toward same-sex parenting homes. While you may have been led to believe that children raised by gay couples are delighted with their lives and view their guardians uncritically, the hidden truth is that many of us who were raised by gay couples are hurting and feel that our rights have been violated.
This “truth” is apparently so hidden that Mr. Lopez is the first, and only son or daughter of a gay or lesbian couple I’ve ever seen publicly campaigning against LGBT rights. And I’ve been covering this issue daily since January, 2008. Oh your mother must be so proud.

Sergey_AksyonovCall out the National Guard – The Gays Are Coming
Crimea’s top official Sergei Aksyonov warned the region’s LGBT community to be silent:
“This is definitely not our style. We in Crimea do not need such people and they will never hold their events publicly. The police and self-defense [forces] will react quickly and explain within three minutes the orientation one should hold to.” He also said that gays in the country “have no chance.”
It takes a big man to call out the military against defenseless civilians. We can only hope that most of the LGBT community in the area got out when Russia came in.

I’m Only as Homophobic as Jesus

Talking about how he came to understand homosexuality, Duck Dynasty “star” Phil Robertson said the Good Book guides his homophobia:
“The only place I know of that I could have gone would be the Bible. The dictionary wouldn’t have explained it, an encyclopaedia wouldn’t have explained it, whether it was a sin or not, so I went to the only source I had. I’m as much of a homophobe as Jesus was. People participating in homosexual behaviour, they need to know that I love them.”
So I guess we should love the people who participate in bigoted behavior too? You know, love the sinner, hate the sin?

Let’s Be More Like Uganda

New York City Councilman Fernando Cabrera visited Uganda, and wishes the US was more like the homophobic country:
“And now they even have a Department of ethics… gay marriage is not accepted in this country, even when the United States of America has put pressure and has told Uganda ‘we’re not gonna fund you anymore unless you allow gay marriage’ and they have stood in their place, and why? Because the Christian [sic] have assume [sic] the place of decision-making for the nation. Abortions are illegal here. Things that Christians really stand for. Why? Because the Christians here took the opportnity to take their rightful place.”
And their “rightful place” is apparently in power, with their heels on the necks of the LGBT community. Just for the record, the USA has never tried to force Uganda to “allow gay marriage”. They have, however, objected to the country throwing people in jail for the “crime” of being gay. By the way, Cabrera is now running for the New York Senate.
