Texas Republicans are whining about the latest Wendy Davis advertising campaign that shows how hypocritical Greg Abbott has been towards others while seeking justice for himself.
In 1984, the current GOP Texas gubernatorial candidate was out jogging during a storm when strong winds blew an oak tree over, which fell on Abbott. The freak accident partially paralyzed him. And what did this “personal responsibility” preaching Republican do? Did he blame himself? No. Did he blame the storm? No. He blamed the homeowners whose yard the tree had been growing.
So he sued them in 2002, even though the tree falling was no fault of their own and the fact that Abbott was the one who chose to go jogging in the middle of dangerous weather. And he won a settlement of $10 million. Abbott and his Republican cohorts accuse poor people of being moochers when he had the gall to sue people for millions of dollars because of his own stupidity. He’s also been a major hypocrite when it comes to helping others find justice.
That’s why Wendy Davis’ campaign released an ad highlighting how big of a hypocrite Abbott has been over the years as Attorney General.
“A tree fell on Greg Abbott. He sued and got millions,” the ad begins. “Since then he spent his career working against other victims.”
Abbott argued a woman whose leg was amputated was not disabled because she had an artificial limb. He ruled against a rape victim who sued a corporation for failing to do a background check on a sexual predator. He sided with a hospital that failed to stop a dangerous surgeon who paralyzed patients.
The ad goes on to describe how Abbott defended a hospital where a doctor screwed up multiple surgeries tha left patients paralyzed, a case where Abbott defended a company that was being sued because one of its door-to-door salesman raped a woman, and perhaps most hypocritical of all, a case where Abbott argued that a woman who had her leg amputated wasn’t disabled because she had a prosthetic limb.
“Greg Abbott, he’s not for you,” the ad concludes.
Here’s the video via YouTube.
The ad featured an image of a wheelchair, which Abbott uses because of his paralysis. But like a prosthetic limb, the wheelchair helps Abbott get around, so would it be fair to say that he isn’t disabled either? It certainly sounds like Abbott’s disability is fair game considering how he has treated others who have sought justice for real wrongs done against them.
Of course, Republicans and the Abbott campaign are all screaming bloody murder about it. A spokeswoman for Abbott called the ad a “desperate” ploy and said Davis should be disqualified from seeking the governorship.
It is challenging to find language strong enough to condemn Sen. Davis’ disgusting television ad, which represents a historic low for someone seeking to represent Texans. Sen. Davis’ ad shows a disturbing lack of judgment from a desperate politician and completely disqualifies her from seeking higher office in Texas.
So, Greg Abbott and his GOP friends are throwing a temper tantrum over this ad but they refused to show similar outrage about “Abortion Barbie” posters that one of his supporters funded. And ever since Wendy Davis emerged as a strong threat to Republican domination of Texas, the GOP has gone full-tilt with the sexism.
Republicans have also attacked Davis’ personal life, including her time as a single mother and her heartbreaking decision to have an abortion. And Abbott has done nothing to stop it. In the end, Wendy Davis wasn’t making fun of Greg Abbott or his disability. She was simply pointing out that Abbott sought relief for himself while denying it to others. That’s fair game.
So, just to recap, Abbott is objecting to an ad that highlights his hypocrisy as the top legal officer in Texas using an incident from his own past, but is completely fine with attacking Davis and her own personal life? Sounds like the only one not qualified to run for public office here is Greg Abbott, not Wendy Davis.
