Wow, just wow. I watched this weeks episode of GLEE and it respectfully deals with the topic of a faculty member going through a transition from female to male. Overall, I feel it was so well done and the scene above moved me to tears.

This is what Billboard.com had to say about it: "Glee gets knocked around a lot for being totally ridiculous a lot of the time, but the show is then also capable of pulling something like this: A transgender chorus of 300, led by a happily returning Unique, to sing the powerful Hairspray ballad about overcoming the odds and dreaming of a better tomorrow, all for a tearful and overwhelmed Coach Beiste. It was pretty special, and a great way to close out the hour."

Transparent Creator Jill Soloway Dedicates Golden Globe Win to Leelah Alcorn

Transparent, the Amazon series that follows the various members of the Pfefferman family as they come to terms with their patriarch, Mort's (Jeffrey Tambor) transition, won the Golden Globe for Best TV Series, Comedy. Joined on stage by the cast, creator Jilly Soloway dedicated the award to "the memory of Leelah Alcorn and too many trans people who die too young."

Reality (sic) TV

‘Reality’ TV is the opposite of reality. It is fiction masquerading as reality.

The cameras are never forgotten by those present, even though we viewers are supposed to pretend the camera crew’s presence doesn’t affect how the people on the show behave.

The inside scoop is all of the scenes portrayed on these shows are basically scripted, even if the dialog isn’t (and often it is). The people on these shows aren’t playing themselves; they’re amateur B- or C-grade actors pretending to be someone we’re supposed to think they’re exactly like in real-life.

Those people on the ‘survival’ reality shows are never in any real danger, because there are safety crews. Even the guy I actually like and have learned some useful tips from, Les Stroud, even though he shoots all his own video. Sure, he puts himself in some very uncomfortable situations, but always in the back of his mind is the comforting knowledge that escape is one radio call away.

And the guys on the fishing boats aren’t actually desperate for that ‘last catch of the season’ — because as long as they bluster all macho-style for the cameras, they can count on the TV syndication checks to tide them over. The ‘homesteaders’ in Alaska mostly put on little vignette scenes to show what they would’ve done 20-odd years ago before the Discover channel showed up and gave ‘em enough money to live comfortably (and usually elsewhere) whenever the cameras are turned off.

(For instance, it is never EVER mentioned that the Kilcher homestead on Kachemak Bay is a mere 5 miles or so from the town of Homer, Alaska, population 5,000, with dozens of stores, restaurants, and attractions; and with Kenai, an even bigger town with a Walmart and Home Depot, another hour or so up the coast on Hwy 1. Oh no — those folks are living on the frontier! “Have to kill that bear or go hungry… ‘cuz the Safeway in Homer might be short on ground beef and frozen pizzas this week.” (/snark))*

It’s just trash TV, ‘Potemkin Village’ shows. Trash sells, and the TV producers like ‘reality’ (sic) shows because they’re crazy-cheap to make. It’s the fast-food version of entertainment. You think maybe you’re consuming something genuine, but afterwards you just feel numb, bloated, and vaguely dirty.And these ‘ethnic’ reality shows are nothing but voyeuristic soap operas, where the actors are told to behave outrageously and stereotypically by the producers and show-runners — because NORMAL is repetitive and boring. They’re instructed to ham it up as much as possible. The shows are as real as a Harlem Globetrotters basketball game, or any TV wrestling match.

19 Kids and Cancelled? Petition to Have The Duggars Fired Launched Online

Better watch out Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar. Your homo-hating ways could end up getting you both a pink slip. Then how will you feel all those damn kids?

An online petition on Change.org is urging TLC to cancel the highly rated reality show "19 Kids and Counting" for the Duggar family's active involvement in anti-LGBT causes. The petition, which was launched three months ago appears to be gaining serious traction. On November 19, Huff Po reported that it had 12,500 signatures. As of this writing, one day later, the petition has over 75,000 signees - 25,000 less than its goal of 100,000.

"The Duggars have been using their fame to promote discrimination, hate, and fear-mongering against gays and transgendered people. You need to take a stand on the side of justice and cancel their show," the petition reads.

The petition titled "End LGBTQ fear mongering by the Duggars" which was launched by Jim Wissick of San Jose, California, makes special mention of Michelle Duggar's participation in a robocall against an anti-discrimination housing law affecting transgender residents of Fayetteville, Arkansas, in which she likened trans women to criminals and child molesters.

"The Fayetteville City Council is voting on an ordinance this Tuesday night that would allow men - yes, I said men - to use women's and girls' restrooms, locker rooms, showers, sleeping areas and other areas that are designated for females only." Duggar said in the robocall. "I don't believe the citizens of Fayetteville would want males with past child predator convictions that claim they are female to have a legal right to enter private areas that are reserved for women and girls."

Fear monger much, Michelle?

The anti-discrimination ordinance was passed by Fayetteville Arkansas City Council in August, but a group called "Repeal 119" gathered enough signatures to put the new law to a public vote on December 9.

The petition noted that according to finance and expenditure reports filed with the County Clerk's office, almost one fourth of the $44,000 raised for candidates to fight the new law has been donated by Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar.

HollywoodLife.com reached out to TLC about the petition, they had no comment.

The famous mega-family is part of the Quiverfull movement, which is largely considered a patriarchal cultish sect of Christianity. Quiverfulls are against pre-marital sex and call for women to be completely subservient to men. The Duggars have used their celebrity to champion anti-gay candidates, and are regulars at rallies and conferences pushing anti-gay and anti-abortion policy.

DirecTV’s Sunday Football Ad Features Gay Sports Fan Couple

Now that the Dallas Cowboys have officially signed Michael Sam to their practice squad, it’s time for the NFL to start publicly welcoming its gay fans into the fold.

Shocking, we know. But gay sports fans are apparently not an urban myth.

To help get things started, DirecTV aired an adorable commercial featuring a gay couple caught in the throes of a heated football rivalry. The ad, unannounced before it aired during Thursday night’s NFL Kickoff game between the Green Bay Packers and the Seattle Seahawks, has been met with an awesome surge of approval online.

“Chris and I have a friendly rivalry,” Dude 1 says in the ad below. “Giants – Cowboys, you know the deal. Sure, we still argue sometimes. But we’re just like any couple, really.”

Kudos, DirecTV. Your next challenge: Deal with the inevitable haters in an even more creative way.

'Walking Dead' Creator Suggests Daryl Dixon Might Be Gay

Fans of AMC's The Walking Dead have long speculated that Daryl Dixon (played by actor Norman Reedus) might possibly be gay - especially with four seasons having come and gone without the volatile zombie hunter developing romantic attractions for any of the show's rotating female survivors.

The show's creator, Robert Kirkman, is well-aware of the speculation and decided to give viewers an answer after a recent fan letter asked him point blank about the widely-held theory, Comicbook.com reports:

When asked if the possibility of Daryl being gay had been considered, Kirkman answered, “All I can say is that it’s been discussed. We have very specific ideas about Daryl’s sexuality (or the seeming lack thereof), and if there’s ever a quiet period in the show where he’s not consistently distracted by crossbowing… we’ll tackle it in the show.”

When also asked if AMC would let the possibility of Daryl Dixon being gay fly, Kirkman responded, “For the record, they absolutely would.

Anti-Gay Activist: 'Game of Thrones' is Proof LGBT Rights Will Normalize Incest

An anti-gay activist wrote an article Friday for a Christian website, claiming HBO's mega popular "Game of Thrones" is proof that the LGBT community will now demand for incest rights, Pink News reports.

Michael Brown, who heads the anti-gay Coalition of Conscience, wrote a piece for WorldNetDaily and wrote:

Gay activists constantly tell us that there's no such thing as a slippery moral slope and that the acceptance of homosexuality will not lead to the acceptance of other sexual practices, such as incest.

The facts prove otherwise, and it is clear that we are rapidly sliding down the very slope whose existence they deny.

With increasing frequency and openness, the media are now promoting and even celebrating incest.

The popular HBO series "Game of Thrones" also features an adult, brother-sister sexual relationship. And there is no slippery slope!

As Pink Star News writes "Game of Thrones" "portrays incest as a way for royal houses such as the Targaryens to keep their bloodline pure, while twins Jaime and Cersei Lannister also have an incestuous relationship."

Brown goes on to write that homosexuality will be the downfall of our society.

"As I continually chart our society's moral free fall, the term that best describes our current condition is sexual anarchy, where men can have sex with men just as well with women, where sex outside of wedlock is just as acceptable as sex within wedlock, where marriage doesn't necessarily mean monogamy and where longstanding social taboos are cast off," he said. "In their zeal to justify homosexual practice, these misguided teachers have opened the door wide to incest as well, removing the primary biblical texts that prohibit these sexual unions."

He added: "Society as a whole needs to take heed as well. If we don't reverse our slide down this slippery moral slope, we will soon crash and burn."

New Series 'The Flash' To Feature Two Gay Characters

The CW’s new Arrow spin-off The Flash, starring former Gleek Grant Gustin as the eponymous superhero, will feature at least two gay characters in its first season. Out gay writer/producer Greg Berlanti (no stranger to LGBT friendly content, and current beau of America’s first openly gay MLS player, Robbie Rogers) along with fellow Flash executive producer Andrew Kreisberg spilled the beans to The Huffington Post:

Berlanti noted that David Singh, a gay DC Comics character, will be part of the "Flash" TV universe: He will recur on the show and will be played by Patrick Sabongui. The producers said that in the episodes sketched out so far, "we haven't dealt with that" aspect of the character, who, in the Arrow comics, is Barry Allen's supervisor in the Central City crime lab.

But Berlanti and Kreisberg added that, in addition to Singh, another gay character will be introduced in the first half of Season 1 of "The Flash" -- a man who already exists in the DC universe (I tried to get them to name the character, but they didn't take the bait). Of course, fans of "Arrow" know that show already has a LGBTQ character in Nyssa Al Ghul (Katrina Law), who was introduced as a former lover of Sara Lance (Caity Lotz).

The Time Chris Christie Shut Down a Public Television Station That Did a Tough Story on Him

There’s a fair amount of Schadenfreude this week among the New Jersey press corps, as they wait for the other shoe to drop in Chris Christie’s Bridgegate scandal and wonder if it’s Michael Drewniak, Christie’s press secretary and his “id,” as one official calls him. Drewniak is on the hot seat after it emerged last week that he got dinner with former Port Authority official and Christie friend David Wildstein two days before Wildstein resigned. “If Drewniak can’t explain what he did at dinner with David, he’s going to be gone, because the press corps in New Jersey hates him with a passion,” says a Democratic strategist. “If you put him on the train to D.C. this week and turned the lights off it would be like Murder on the Orient Express — he’d have 50 slashes in him. You can only be a jackass for so long before everyone wants to knife you.”

As a reporter, it’s hard not to feel your stomach turn while sifting through the documents released from Governor Chris Christie’s office last week, as Drewniak brushes off reporters’ inquiries about the closures (“Fuck him and the S-L [Star Ledger],” he wrote, and then called a reporter “a fucking mutt”). Christie's office wasn't always this way: When he was nominated to be U.S. Attorney by George W. Bush in 2001, remaining in the job until he became governor, he was adept at befriending reporters.

What the Heck is Al Jazeera America?

Tired of “info-tainment?” Tired of pundits screaming at each other between the seemingly endless commercials for Activia, reverse home mortgages and gold investments? Have you had just about enough of watching MSNBC only to watch “defund Obamacare” ads in the middle of the Rachel Maddow Show?

Well, guess what? Al Jazeera America launches on this coming Tuesday, August 20th, and they have stated that there will be no more than 6 minutes of commercials per hour. In addition to that, they have promised to be completely unbiased.

“It will be fact-based, meaty, balanced reporting,” stated Al Jazeera America deputy launch chief Paul Eedle. “We will be absolutely unbiased and impartial.”

There will be some familiar faces like Soledad O’Brien and Ali Velshi formerly with CNN, as well as some former executives from NBC, CBS and others.

Many have speculated that Al Jazeera will face an uphill fight to gain traction in the American media, but there is a niche right now that is just begging to be filled with a straight-forward news channel devoid of spin, regardless of which “side” it comes from. The other problem (which can be easily be disproven by Al Jazeera) is the idea pushed by right-wing media that they’re an anti-American, pro-radical Islam propaganda machine. The people who tend to believe that are those who have never actually watched the channel, from my personal experiences in talking with people who have voiced that concern.

Al Jazeera’s target audience is a younger demographic which tends to be more globally-minded and independent in their world view, versus those who rely on just a couple of sources for their information. They’re hoping to appeal to an audience that doesn’t want their news delivered to them with regurgitated talking points, out of context video clips, and an ever present partisan slant reinforced by hosts who angrily shout down guests brought on to prove they’re “fair and balanced.” As much as I enjoy some of the programs on MSNBC, they are there to make money off the other side of the political spectrum, with an admittedly liberal slant. Nothing wrong with that, but a lot of us prefer to process information and come to our own conclusions.

While our “news” market is already saturated with a myriad of commercial and independent media sources, there is a huge void when it comes to actual news instead of hyped partisan opinion thinly disguised as news – and that is the void Al Jazeera America hopes to fill. I don’t know about you, but I’m hoping that we finally get an actual source of “fair and balanced” news. Only time will tell whether Al Jazeera America lives up to their word and succeeds in bringing that to us.
