In a nation of unabated progress, the Hoosier State is considering passing a regressive and deeply offensive same-sex marriage ban. An MSNBC host takes exception:
But now, with eighteen states (+DC) with marriage equality and the federal Defense of Marriage Act (so-called) a fading memory, no one has any excuse. Equality is around us, all around us for public consumption. A state lawmaker who turns a blind eye to the benignly peaceful marriages and instead gets behind the far-right fear rhetoric is making a choice to thumb his or her nose at concrete, tangible information (not to mention obvious polling trends) in favor of wanton bias. I suspect the history books will be much less kind to these discriminators-come-lately.
It's an interesting time for a politician concerned about his or her legacy. While all support for these kinds of marriage bans is unfortunate, the history books will likely allow a bit of cover for those figures, (D) or (R), who supported these bans back in the early part of the century. When the equality was more elusive, the ability and/or willingness to succumb to the anti-gay movement's misinformation campaigns was a bit more "understandable." Even if through rolled eyes, folks can more fully see how these early day holdouts wanted to "evolve" alongside the polling.
