Republicans are trying to distance themselves from calls to impeach President Obama. Rep. Steve King (R-IA) says that he’s not pushing for impeachment, however, if the president continues to break the law, then impeachment proceedings is something he’ll support. According to Think Progress, King also said to Breitbart that Obama is sending the House down the path towards considering impeachment.
Republican leadership is calling the impeachment calls a Democratic scam, and they’re using that lie to raise more money ahead of the November elections. Business Insider reported that House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) said Democrats invented the whole scenario to help with their fundraising.
But House Majority Whip, Steve Scalise (R-LA), hinted to Fox News that the House would consider impeachment if the lawsuit didn’t pan out. And others have been at it, too.
ABC News has a neat article on just who started the impeachment talk, and who’s responsible for it: Reps. Michele Bachmann (R-MN), Steve Stockman (R-MI), Louie Gohmert(R-TX), and at least eight others have also talked about impeachment. Allen West called Obama’s handling of Bowie Bergdahl’s release an impeachable offense.
Republicans running for office in various places have also called for, or at least discussed, impeaching Obama as recently as this past spring.
Then you have the fact that Sarah Palin has loudly called for Obama’s impeachment, and even said that the rest of us would wholly support that if only we knew what his offenses were. She’s been calling for it so loudly that both Bill Maher and Chicago Tribune writer Rex Huppke made fun of her for it.
Despite the fact that Palin is a hard-core TEApublican nut job that even many Republicans try to steer clear of these days, she’s still very firmly associated with the Tea Party wing of the GOP in the minds of many Americans.
It’s also not outside of the realm of possibility, considering that this lawsuit of the House’s might as well be a call for impeachment. They’re suing him for allegedly breaking the laws he’s sworn to uphold. Impeachment is formally accusing a public official of breaking the law, and sending him to trial.
Then you have good ol’ Steve King, who says he’s not pushing for impeachment, and then pushes for it. Or, at least, calls it a possibility in the face of Boehner’s assertion that it’s not a possibility.
So which is it, GOP? Are you thinking about impeaching Obama, or aren’t you? All King did was throw more confusion on the issue.
