West Virginia University Diver Comes Out As Gay, Qualifies For NCAA Post-Season

West Virginia University freshman diver Alex Obendorf came out publicly in an interview with the Columbia Missourian as he expressed his admiration for fellow gay divers Tom Daley and Matthew Mitcham.

He tells the Missourian:

"I like their form and everything," Obendorf said. "I'm pretty proud of them because I know that it's a hard thing to open up about, especially to the public as an Olympian. I am openly gay. I know where they come from."
Obendorf's story is even more compelling considering he almost died in an August 2013 car crash, which left him with traumatic brain injury and off the diving board for nine months.

He returned permanently to diving in May 2014 and made the WVU team in August. Obendorf's coach is currently pushing him to make the NCAA championships!

We're rooting for you, Alex!
