Glacier Scientist Claims Global Warming Is ‘Good,’ Says ‘It Doesn’t Matter’ If Man Causes It

One scientist doesn’t dispute that global warming is a legitimate claim, nor does he necessarily dispute that man is causing it. According to Professor Emeritus of Earth Sciences and Climate Change at the University of Maine Terry Hughes, “it doesn’t matter” if human activity is causing climate change.

In fact Hughes, a glaciologist, takes it a step farther: global warming is good because it’s much better than, say, global cooling. In fact, Hughes is very explicit that he doesn’t doubt the legitimacy of climate change for a second, the Capital Journal reports:

I never doubted it for an instant. The Earth has not always been like this.

In fact, Hughes feels that humans likely have a lot to do with the shift in our planet’s climate:

It may have given it a nudge. But there are so many natural events that swamp that out, for example, the eruption of Vesuvius, or Krakatoa. The industrial revolution was more gradual, over decades.

Hughes, however, looks back to the 1970’s when he says his colleagues feared a new ice age. But, as Skeptical Science notes, the “predictions” of an impending icy doom were mostly based in the media’s fear-mongering. The majority of peer-reviewed research at the time actually predicted a warming trend spurred by increasing CO2 in the Earth’s atmosphere.

When it comes to pointing out the absolute stupidity often shown by Republicans, few do it better than Jon Stewart. Then again, when you’re dealing with a joke of a political party, what better place to mock that idiocy than on Comedy Central?

Take for instance Stewart’s absolutely thrashing of three Republicans on the House Committee on Science, Space and Technology; Representatives Larry Buschon (R-IN), Dana Rohrabacher (R-CA) and Steve Stockman (R-TX), who all happen to be climate change deniers.

Stewart seemed especially annoyed at Buschon for dismissing the facts about climate change, with his reasoning being that the science is backed by “climatologists whose career depends on the climate changing. I could read that, but I don’t believe it.”

Let that sink in for a moment. Buschon’s “defense” for not trusting climate scientists is because their job security relies on climate change being real. That, quite possibly, might be the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard uttered from the mouth of another human being (considering his position and the context) - ever. 

But then Stewart absolutely crushed Buschon, saying, “Since we’re talking about the influence money might have on climate change opinion, it turns out Representative Buschon’s three biggest campaign donors are Murray Energy, Koch Enterprises, and Peabody Energy. And trust me, those three well-funded companies would love to disprove climate change to the satisfaction of the scientific community at large. So if scientists could be bought, these motherf**kers would’ve already made it rain in nerdtown.”

Amazing coincidence, isn’t it? Someone who refuses to believe in climate change being largely funded by three companies that profit heavily by destroying our planet.

Utah Lawmaker Says Atmosphere Needs More Carbon Dioxide Emissions

The majority of climate scientists who believe that concerning levels of carbon dioxide are being pumped into the atmosphere have got it wrong; Instead, there should be more. Or so argues Utah state representative Jerry Anderson, who put forth a bill that would limit the state’s ability to regulate emissions of the greenhouse gas. Utah being Utah, "Anderson’s climate change skepticism enjoyed a receptive hearing from committee members, [but] they voted to hold the bill," The Salt Lake Tribune noted. 

The bill was aimed at clarifying the definition of the term "air pollutant," and would exempt "natural" gases and prevent state standards for carbon dioxide below 500 parts per million, which is far above the current level, near 400 ppm. But the bill hit stumbling blocks, such as the "undeniable" evidence that naturally-occurring radon (and xenon and cyanide) pose a threat to human health. Those pesky facts. 

"We are short of carbon dioxide for the needs of the plants," said Anderson. "Concentrations reached 600 parts per million at the time of the dinosaurs and they did quite well," he added. Anderson, who was incredibly once designated as Wyoming's biology teacher of the year, obviously has a generous definition of "doing well," at least when it concerns an extinct type of animal whose existence hinges on an acceptance of science (which doesn't evidently extend to climate science). He may also be confused about the differences between dinos and humans.

It goes without saying that anyone who takes Rush Limbaugh seriously should have their head examined.  While he might have been relevant long ago in some draconian time in American politics, Limbaugh is now nothing more than a caricature for liberal writers such as myself to mock publicly.

So when he made his asinine comments about a real meteorological term (and phenomenon) being some kind of leftist liberal conspiracy to perpetuate the overwhelmingly scientifically-backed climate change – you knew it would be a field day.

First it was a senior meteorologist with AccuWeather who dismantled Limbaugh’s pathetic attempt to discredit the science behind climate change, and now it’s someone a little more famous.

NBC’s Today Show weatherman Al Roker decided to weigh in on Limbaugh’s comments.

Rush Limbaugh claims the Polar Vortex is a creation of a left-wing, liberal media conspiracy. It’s Meteorology 101. No political agenda

But he didn’t stop there.  He then posted pictures from the American Meteorological Society, dated 1959, highlighting the part of the book which defines the term “polar vortex”:
