Wendy Davis Ad Slams Greg Abbott For Hypocrisy As Republicans Cry Foul

Texas Republicans are whining about the latest Wendy Davis advertising campaign that shows how hypocritical Greg Abbott has been towards others while seeking justice for himself.

In 1984, the current GOP Texas gubernatorial candidate was out jogging during a storm when strong winds blew an oak tree over, which fell on Abbott. The freak accident partially paralyzed him. And what did this “personal responsibility” preaching Republican do? Did he blame himself? No. Did he blame the storm? No. He blamed the homeowners whose yard the tree had been growing.

So he sued them in 2002, even though the tree falling was no fault of their own and the fact that Abbott was the one who chose to go jogging in the middle of dangerous weather. And he won a settlement of $10 million. Abbott and his Republican cohorts accuse poor people of being moochers when he had the gall to sue people for millions of dollars because of his own stupidity. He’s also been a major hypocrite when it comes to helping others find justice.

That’s why Wendy Davis’ campaign released an ad highlighting how big of a hypocrite Abbott has been over the years as Attorney General.

“A tree fell on Greg Abbott. He sued and got millions,” the ad begins. “Since then he spent his career working against other victims.”

Candidate for governor of Texas is against gay marriage because he's had a wife for 33 years

Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott, running for governor of the Lone Star state, said during a debate Tuesday (30 September) that he is against same-sex marriage because he's been married to a woman for 33 years.

According to LoneStarQ.com, the gay marriage question was posed to Abbott via Twitter from a man named John from Fort Worth: 'If a 10-year-old girl asked you whether her two dads should be allowed to get married, what would you tell her?'

Replied Abbott: 'John, I want you to know there are good and decent people on both sides oft his issue. I believe in traditional marriage. That’s what 75 percent of Texans agreed with less than a decade ago when they passed a constitutional amendment in the state of Texas saying that marriage in Texas is a union between one man and one woman.

'Now, for me personally, this is more than a constitutional amendment. I’ve been married to my wife Cecilla for more than 33 years now.'

Moderator Norma Garcia then asked: 'Is that what you would tell the 10-year-old?'

Replied Abbott: 'That’s what I just told John.'

Democrat Wendy Davis took the opportunity to reiterate her support of same-sex marriage.

Abbott and Davis are running to succeed Rick Perry who has been an outspoken opponent of gay marriage.

The state's ban on gay marriage has been overturned by a federal judge and that ruling is being appealed to the US Supreme Court.

Texas Attorney General accused of ‘stalling’ same-sex marriage appeal

Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott has been accused of deliberately stalling his appeal, after the state’s same-sex marriage ban was struck down.

Judge Orlando Garcia struck down the state’s marriage ban in February, but stayed the ruling, meaning it will not come into effect until Abbott’s appeal is concluded.

However, over five months later, Abbott and Solicitor General Jonathan Mitchell have sought a second extension to the final deadline for the submission of their legal brief, because it is purportedly still not ready.

The deadline for his office’s submission was initially on July 9, but he has received an extension to July 16, and now July 28.

Even if he keeps to the new July 28 date, the protracted legal process means final briefs won’t have to be submitted until September, at which point couples will have been banned from marrying for seven months without a single appeal hearing.

Applying for the second extension, Abbott’s office wrote: “Applicants do not seek this extension for purposes of delay, but rather so that appellate counsel Solicitor General Jonathan Mitchell has sufficient time to prepare a brief that is thorough, accurate, and helpful to the Court.

“The issue in this case, the constitutionality of Texas’ same-sex marriage laws, is important and complex. The additional time would allow Mr. Mitchell to give this case the attention that it deserves.

Wendy Davis Endorses Marriage Equality, Calls on Texas AG to Stop Defending Gay Marriage Ban

Wendy Davis, the Texas state senator whose 11 hour filibuster of a abortion bill last summer gained her national headlines and a platform for a gubernatorial run, has come out publicly for marriage equality and has urged Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott to stop defending the state’s constitutional ban on same-sex marriage. The San Antonio Express-News reports:

“It's my strong belief that when people love each other and are desirous of creating a committed relationship with each other that they should be allowed to marry, regardless of their sexual orientation,” Davis told the Express-News editorial board.

Davis, D-Fort Worth, said she is “pleased” that the state's constitutional definition of marriage, as being between a man and a woman, is under challenge in federal court.

“I think that what we see happening at the federal level in terms of constitutional interpretations on that provide some hope that it may be found unconstitutional,” she said.

Greg Abbott, who is Davis's presumed general-election opponent in the race for governor later this year, scoffed at her request to stop defending the state's ban on same-sex marriage. Said a spokesman for the Abbott campaign:

“Unlike Senator Davis' positions on the issues, the Texas constitution is not subject to change on the latest whims of the day. Senator Davis' comment suggesting the Attorney General not enforce the Constitution mimics an Obama-style approach to government, and Texans deserve better,” 

Davis’ campaign for governor is seen as the first real test for Battleground Texas, the Political Action Committee founded by top political strategists, campaign operatives, and field directors from the Obama 2012 campaign. The PAC’s long-term goal is turning Texas into a presidential swing state, something that Republicans in the state are increasingly worried about.

Abbot, to his credit, realizes that Texas’ 38 electoral votes are “the last line of defense” in keeping Republicans electorally competitive in presidential elections. So naturally, he’s already on record saying that Battleground Texas represents a greater threat than North Korea.

It would seem that, in Texas, the favorite pastime of conservatives is alienating the female vote at every opportunity. This time it is coming from a top adviser to State Attorney General, Greg Abbot ( R ), Dave Carney who tweeted on Thursday, “Total Recall in CO (and why Wendy Davis is too Stupid to be Governor)” with a link to a post celebrating the recall of two Democrat State Senators in Colorado by a blogger in Urban Grounds post who also explains why he thinks, “Texas state Senator Wendy ‘Abortion Barbie’ Davis is even dumber than her fake blonde hair would imply.”

It was only a few weeks ago that Abbot thanked a supporter for his tweet referring to Davis as “Retard Barbie.” It would seem that his office doesn’t think that enough has been done yet to alienate women and feels that there is more yet to be done to drive off the votes of a demographic that they do not seem to need in order to win elections.

The Texas Democrat Party responded to Carney’s tweet with a statement on the Burnt Orange Report which posits that this seems to be the campaign strategy of Texas Republicans. The statement says, “It’s clear that Abbott’s advisers are following a strategy of offending every woman voter in the state of Texas. A woman who worked her way from a trailer park to graduate from Harvard Law School with honors is anything but stupid. Women throughout the state know what it’s like to have their intelligence ignored and made a joke. It’s never been a good idea to mess with Texas women. And come November 2014, the women of Texas will make clear that the joke’s actually on Republicans who find it okay to reference such a hard working and smart woman as stupid.”

A quick look at the comparative educational credentials of Wendy Davis and current Governor Rick Perry would lead any rational person to wonder why they would even consider bringing up the intelligence of Ms. Davis. Governor Perry has a B.S. from Texas A and M in animal science and a less than stellar GPA while Davis, after receiving her Baccalaureate from Texas Christian University on a full scholarship and graduating first in her class, attended graduate school at Harvard Law School where she graduated with honors and was admitted to the Texas Bar four months later.

With this gaping chasm between the educational credentials of the two one might think that the TEApublicans would not want comparison of education between her and any of their candidates for any office. It is not easy to get into Harvard Law and anyone who makes it should be accorded some sort of respect for having the intelligence to meet their admissions requirements. Not, apparently in Texas.

Wendy Davis achieved none of her accomplishments the easy way. She married at 18, had a daughter and divorced a year later. Living in a trailer park she worked her way through college and law school while raising her daughter as a single parent. She was the first in her family to graduate college. She attained every success in her life through intelligence, hard work and determination.

Rick Perry, the man who was unable to remember a list of three items in his primary debates for the Presidential nomination was a typical frat boy stumbling his way through college after which he did a stint as a pilot in the Air Force before joining his father’s cotton farming business. Hardly a tough life, everything was handed to him and yet he could only coast his way through it.

It would seem that the old adage about people living in glass houses might apply to Texas TEApublicans when they start taking pot shots at Wendy Davis. Of course this reasoning would never occur to them since a strong intelligent woman like Wendy Davis scares the bejesus out of them, they have no idea how to deal with a non-submissive woman.
