President Obama is the duly elected leader of the United States. As the head of our government, President Obama should command the loyalty of members of Congress, even if they disagree with him on political issues. Therefore, pledging allegiance to a foreign leader should be unthinkable.
But US Senator Lindsey Graham is openly professing his loyalty, and that of his Republican comrades, to the leader of another country instead of his own president and the American people.
During a visit to Jerusalem in Israel on Sunday, the senator from South Carolina kissed the ring of Israeli President Benjamin Netanyahu and declared that the Republican-controlled Congress would follow his lead on foreign policy decisions in the Middle East instead of President Obama.
According to the Jewish Telegraphic Agency,
U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham said in Jerusalem that the Senate will vote on an Iran sanctions bill next month.
Graham (R-S.C.), who is expected to take over as chairman of the Foreign Appropriations Subcommittee when the Republicans assume control of the Senate in January, met with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in the Israeli capital on Saturday night.
Graham told Netanyahu that “the Congress will follow your lead” and will want to have a say about any final deal.
In addition, Graham also threatened the United Nations with a “violent backlash” from Republicans if a resolution is passed to create a Palestinian state.
“Any effort by the French, the Jordanians or anyone to avoid direct negotiations between the Israelis and the Palestinians over the peace process, anyone who tries to take this to the U.N. Security Council, there will be a violent backlash by the Congress that could include suspending funding to the United Nations,” Graham said. “We will not sit back and allow the United Nations to take over the peace process.”
Ironically, the job of the United Nations is to maintain peace in the world through international cooperation. And yet, here is a United States Senator openly threatening to hurt the UN while simultaneously pressing his lips against the ass cheeks of the Israeli president who has made genocide against Palestinians his top foreign policy goal. The Israeli genocide against Palestinians has inflamed tensions in the Middle East. As such, the Israelis are the ones threatening peace right now, not the United Nations.
Lindsey Graham is a disgraceful American. Rather than support President Obama and back policies that would help bring peace to an increasingly violent region of the world, Graham is betraying his country and his president by openly pledging his allegiance to the leader of a foreign nation. That sounds an awful lot like treason. Basically, Graham is saying that no matter what President Obama does to bring peace to the region, Graham and his fellow Republicans will work to undermine his administration and the will of the American people on behalf of a foreign leader. That is not only dangerous to our democracy, it’s a threat to the lives of our servicemen and women since Congress has the power to declare war even if the president doesn’t believe war is necessary.
The fact is, the leader who spearheads American foreign policy is the AMERICAN president, not the Israeli president. If Netanyahu had his way, our military would be sent in to slaughter the rest of the innocent Palestinians who survived the merciless onslaught conducted by the Israeli military last year.
Israel is using America for its own Nazi-like purposes and now they clearly have a US Senator in their pocket and one who isexploring the possibility of running for president no less. If a Democrat had done this with a foreign leader, Republicans would be screaming for blood. This is a betrayal of our current president and the American people who expect their elected officials to be loyal to them and not some wannabe dictator across the sea.
